The Mona Lisa’s enigmatic smile has captivated audiences for centuries. But what if, in the future, her enigmatic gaze could be replicated with a few clicks of a mouse?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the art world, churning out visually stunning and conceptually intriguing pieces.

However, the question remains: can AI-generated art ever truly replace the value and allure of a hand-crafted original artwork?

AI’s Artistic Arsenal: Speed, Spectacle, and Spot-on Replication

AI art boasts undeniable advantages. Unlike their human counterparts who toil for years honing their craft, AI algorithms can generate a mind-boggling array of artistic styles and themes in a matter of seconds.

Struggling with creative block? An AI tool can churn out a dozen variations on your initial concept, sparking new ideas and igniting the wellspring of inspiration.

Beyond sheer speed, AI art possesses an uncanny ability to produce hyper-realistic and technically flawless works! Imagine replicating the intricate brushwork of a Dutch Golden Age masterpiece or capturing the swirling light and shadow of a Caravaggio painting.

With AI, achieving such technical mastery becomes a matter of feeding the algorithm the right data sets. This efficiency can be a game-changer for artists seeking to push the boundaries of detail and realism.

One particularly fascinating application of AI art is its ability to resurrect lost artistic styles. In 2018, researchers used AI to recreate the long-lost paintings of Zeuxis, a legendary Greek artist whose works were so lifelike they supposedly fooled birds.

This ability to bridge the gap between past and present artistic movements opens doors for historical and artistic exploration.

The Heart of Handmade Art: Where Emotion Meets Imperfection

However, the allure of AI art lies primarily in its technical prowess, not its emotional depth. Every brushstroke, every deliberate smudge, and even the occasional happy accident on a handmade artwork tells a story about the artist’s process and emotions.

These imperfections become badges of authenticity, whispers of human vulnerability that AI simply cannot replicate.

Owning a piece of handmade art fosters a deeper connection with the artist’s vision. Imagine gazing upon a Van Gogh sunflower, its swirling brushstrokes mirroring the inner turmoil of the artist.

Or standing before a Jackson Pollock drip painting, feeling the artist’s frenetic energy captured in the splatter of paint. These connections transcend the visual; they become a form of dialogue with the artist’s soul.

Beyond the Canvas: AI as an Artistic Muse

Instead of viewing them as adversaries, AI and handmade art can co-exist in a symbiotic relationship. AI can be a powerful tool in the artist’s arsenal, fuelling creative exploration in fascinating ways.

Imagine a sculptor using an AI program to visualize different poses for their clay creation in 3D, allowing them to experiment with movement and balance before ever touching the material.

Painters can leverage AI to explore variations on their favourite artists’ styles, feeding their chosen masters’ works into an algorithm to generate new colour palettes or unexpected textural effects.

This type of AI-assisted exploration can spark fresh ideas and help artists break free from creative ruts.

The Enduring Legacy of Originality: Owning a Piece of History

While AI art has a rightful place in the evolving art landscape, it’s unlikely to replace the value of a handmade original.

There’s a unique magic in the physicality of art – the texture of oil paint on canvas, the delicate lines of a charcoal sketch, the smooth feel of a hand-thrown ceramic mug.

Owning a handmade piece is not just an aesthetic investment; it’s acquiring a piece of history, a tangible connection to the artist’s creative journey.

Consider the story of Leonardo da Vinci’s “Salvator Mundi.” This long-lost masterpiece was rediscovered in 2005, restored, and ultimately sold at auction for a record-breaking $450.3 million.

The astronomical price tag wasn’t simply for the painting’s subject matter or historical significance. It was for the thrill of owning a one-of-a-kind artwork by a legendary artist, a piece imbued with the touch of a human hand and the whispers of a bygone era.

The Future of Art: A Fusion of Machine and Muse

The rise of AI art doesn’t signal the end of the traditional artist. Rather, it heralds a new era of artistic exploration, where human creativity and technological innovation co-exist.

AI can streamline tedious tasks, generate fresh ideas, and even help with the physical creation of art through technologies like 3D printing.

But the spark of inspiration, the emotional depth, and the enduring legacy of human creation – these are qualities that AI will continue to struggle to replicate.

Perhaps the future of art lies not in a battle between human and machine.

Our homes are sanctuaries. They shield us from the outside world and provide a space for rest, reflection, and connection. But sometimes, a simple roof and four walls don’t quite capture the essence of what we seek.

This is where art, particularly sculpture, steps in. Sculptures can transcend mere decoration, becoming powerful tools to infuse your space with a spiritual dimension.

art

So, how can sculptors breathe life and a sense of serenity into your surroundings? Let’s explore the various ways sculptures can add a spiritual touch to your space:

Evoking Symbols and Stories:

Mythology and Religion:

Throughout history, sculptures have been used to depict deities, prophets, and spiritual figures.

A statue of Buddha radiating peace, a Hindu murti representing a specific deity, or an abstract depiction of the Virgin Mary can serve as a constant reminder of your faith and a source of comfort.

Nature as Inspiration:

Nature is often seen as a manifestation of the divine. Sculptures that capture the essence of natural elements – a flowing river, a soaring bird, a blooming flower – can evoke a sense of tranquility and interconnectedness with the natural world.

Universal Symbols:

Certain symbols transcend cultures and religions. A sculpture of a hand reaching upwards can represent hope and aspiration, a spiral can symbolize the journey of life, and an eye can embody awareness and protection.

Choose symbols that resonate with your personal beliefs and spiritual path.

Materials and Techniques:

The materials and techniques used by the sculptor can also contribute to the spiritual impact of the artwork.

Natural Materials:

Natural materials like stone, wood, and bronze have a timeless quality that connects us to the earth and evokes a sense of grounding.

The raw beauty of these materials resonates with the natural world, often considered sacred in many cultures.

Light and Shadow:

The way light interacts with a sculpture can be incredibly evocative. Sculptures with smooth, polished surfaces can reflect light and create a sense of openness, while rough-hewn textures can cast dramatic shadows, adding depth and mystery.

Minimalism and Abstraction:

Sometimes, simplicity speaks volumes. Minimalist sculptures with clean lines and uncluttered forms can create a sense of peace and serenity.

Abstract sculptures can spark introspection and ignite your imagination, inviting a personal connection with the artwork’s spiritual essence.

Placement and Integration

The placement of a sculpture within your space plays a crucial role in its spiritual impact.

Focal Points:

Placing a sculpture in a central location, perhaps near a window where it receives natural light, can create a focal point for meditation or prayer.

Juxtaposition:

Juxtaposing a spiritual sculpture with contrasting elements – a modern sculpture in a traditional setting, or a rough-hewn piece next to smooth furnishings – can create visual tension that draws attention and sparks contemplation.

Creating a Sanctuary:

Dedicate a specific space in your home for spiritual reflection. This could be a small corner with a sculpture as the centerpiece, a meditation room, or even a designated outdoor space.

Sculptures for Your Specific Needs

Finding Peace: If inner peace is your goal, consider sculptures that evoke calmness and serenity. Look for pieces with smooth, flowing lines, natural materials, and perhaps depictions of calming elements like water or nature.

Seeking Inspiration: If you crave inspiration, a sculpture with an upward motion, sharp angles, or a depiction of a powerful figure can be a constant source of motivation.

Connecting with the Divine: For those seeking a deeper connection with their faith, a sculpture representing a religious figure or symbol can serve as a focus for prayer and meditation.

Finding the Right Sculpture

The most important factor is finding a sculpture that resonates with you on a personal level. Here are some tips:

Visit galleries and art shows: Immerse yourself in the world of sculpture and see how different pieces make you feel.

Talk to the artist: Discuss the inspiration behind the sculptures and their intended effect.

Consider commissioned work: If you have a specific vision in mind, commission a sculptor to create a piece that perfectly complements your space and spiritual needs.

The Enduring Power of Sculpture

In a world filled with fleeting trends, a well-chosen sculpture can become a cherished part of your life, a constant source of inspiration, and a window to the spiritual realm.

By infusing your space with these thoughtfully chosen pieces, you can cultivate a sanctuary that reflects your inner world and fosters a sense of peace, purpose, and connection.

Art has long been recognized as a powerful form of human expression. From ancient cave paintings to modern masterpieces, art has the ability to captivate our senses, evoke emotions, and inspire introspection.

But beyond its aesthetic value, art also holds a profound impact on mental health.

In this blog, we will explore the connection between art and mental well-being, highlighting how engaging with art can promote psychological healing and foster overall mental health.

1. Art as a Therapeutic Outlet:

Art serves as a therapeutic outlet for individuals facing mental health challenges. Engaging in artistic endeavors such as painting, drawing, or sculpting provides an avenue for self-expression and emotional release.

Through the act of creating art, individuals can channel their thoughts, emotions, and experiences into a tangible form, allowing them to gain a sense of control and empowerment over their internal struggles.

This process can facilitate catharsis, helping to alleviate anxiety, stress, and depression.

2. Self-Discovery and Identity:

Artistic expression encourages self-discovery and a deeper understanding of one’s own emotions and experiences.

By engaging with art, individuals are invited to explore their inner world, unraveling complex thoughts and feelings that may otherwise remain buried.

This introspection aids in self-reflection, facilitating personal growth and helping individuals to gain insights into their own identities. Through art, individuals can embrace and express their true selves, leading to a greater sense of authenticity and self-acceptance.

3. Emotional Resilience and Coping Mechanisms:

Art offers a safe space to process and cope with difficult emotions. When words fail to capture the depth of our feelings, art steps in as a universal language that transcends verbal limitations.

Engaging with art allows individuals to externalize their emotions, providing a healthier means of coping with stress, trauma, or grief. It enables them to confront and explore challenging emotions, fostering emotional resilience and developing adaptive coping mechanisms.

The act of creating art can offer solace, serving as a form of self-soothing and a source of comfort during times of distress.

4. Mindfulness and Flow States:

Immersing oneself in the creation or appreciation of art can induce a state of mindfulness and flow. Mindfulness involves being fully present in the moment, cultivating awareness without judgment.

Art provides a gateway to this state of mindfulness, as it requires focused attention, concentration, and a deep connection with the artwork.

Engaging in art can foster a sense of timelessness, allowing individuals to escape the pressures of daily life and enter a state of pure absorption.

This experience of flow promotes relaxation, reduces anxiety, and enhances overall well-being.

5. Connection and Community:

Art has the power to connect people and build communities. Through shared artistic experiences, individuals can find solace in a sense of belonging and mutual understanding.

Art therapy groups, community art projects, or even visiting art galleries can create spaces for social interaction, fostering supportive relationships and reducing feelings of isolation.

The collective appreciation of art stimulates empathy and compassion, nurturing a sense of unity and shared humanity.

Conclusion:

The profound psychological impact of art on mental health cannot be overstated. Whether through active participation or passive appreciation, art holds transformative potential.

Engaging with art can facilitate self-expression, emotional healing, and personal growth. It offers a sanctuary for self-discovery, emotional resilience, and the cultivation of mindfulness.

Moreover, art brings people together, fostering connection and community. So, let us embrace the transformative power of art and harness its ability to enhance our mental well-being.

India is known for its cultural diversity, and one can experience it in the folk arts and crafts of the country. India is known for its exceptional painting styles across different regions, which is a testimony of its customs and traditions. The majority of the Indian painting styles exist as wall paintings, cloth paintings, and even murals that exhibit the different art forms on canvas, paper, walls, etc. These paintings represent emotions, thoughts, and feelings based on the neural flora, fauna, respect for deities, and mythology which can be found on IndiGalleria. Let us look at some of the renowned types of painting in India.

10 Types of Painting in India

1. Madhubani Paintings

The folk art of Bihar, originally the Madhubani Paintings from Bihar, is a traditional Indian Art form distinguished for using the local plants for colors, treating the surface of the paper with cow dung, and using wood, typically bamboo sticks for brushes. It is also known as Mithila Painting.

The Madhubani paintings feature geometrical shapes and patterns, one of India’s most famous folk-art forms. Many artists who create Madhubani art have received much recognition for their talent and awards, namely Padma Shri and other National awards.

2. Warli Paintings

Warli paintings are an art form from Maharashtra, India. They are one of the finest art forms in the folk style of paintings. The warli art generally depicts farming life and also portrays Mother Nature. It is a form of respect to make art for their natural habitat and wildlife around them.

This art form uses geometrical figures like squares, circles, and triangles. Its simplicity and elegance make it unique in depicting the various natural things that exist in nature, such as a circle trying to show the sun or the moon. In contrast, triangles show the conical trees and mountains. A square can be anything like a piece of land or a house. This art form is created inside the walls of village huts and painted with white color made of rice flour and water.

3. Kalighat Painting

The key highlight of Kalighat Painting is its bright colors and bold outlines, and this art is originally from Kolkata, West Bengal. They started by displaying the mythological characters first, but after some time, they started spreading their variety to other themes.

These paintings had mythological depictions of Hindu Gods and Goddesses and included in their themes daily life and societal references. The painting looks simple but is meticulous work. It starts with an outline of pencil work where the thick and thin boundaries depict different areas of the body. These paintings are themes based on religious and non-religious topics. You often see paintings featuring women and their way of adorning their bodies. Today painting practice is different from the past. But it remains one of India’s most distinct, meticulous, and beautiful forms of artwork.

4. Phad

Phad is a folk painting originally from the state of Rajasthan. This painting is on canvas or long pieces of cloth. These paintings, too, depict the heroic life of the Gods painted on the pieces of clothes and put up a whole story about it. The characters made in these paintings are telling a story or putting out a drama in front of the onlookers, so they never face the audience but instead each other. The pictorial surface of the clothing is flat, and the characters are distributed all over the space with their scale of size, telling their role in the story.

5. Kalamkari

We can paint Kalamkari paintings on a cotton textile, using only natural dyes made from vegetables to paint on them. As a folk art, we use it to represent culture and religion. The best part is that it connects our history and mythology intertwined with our humanity and history.

It originated from Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana states hundreds of years ago. There are two types of Kalamkari paintings, namely, Srikalahasti and Machilipatnam.

This art form was also taken over in the family businesses and passed down from generation to generation. In Andhra Pradesh, people have practiced this art form to earn money.

6. Miniature Painting

Miniature Paintings are very small, vibrant, and colorful paintings. They are unique in how their details are marked and painted, and the brushwork is intricate and detailed.

Since it’s a folk art too, people used traditional ways of making the colors from vegetables, precious stones, Gold, silver, and indigo.

What started as a need for people to aid them in understanding manuscripts and documents by illustrating facts later became a famous folk art, the miniature painting. That’s why it connects with book art. It is not just restricted to paintings but also engravings and sculptures.

7. Gond Painting

Gond paintings are folk art practiced by the Gond tribe in India. Unlike other folk arts, the Gond art preserves and connect the Gond culture and community with different parts and cultures of India. The Gond tribe is the biggest in India, and they reside in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Bihar.

The word ‘Kond,’ which means green mountains and tribal people, is the word from which the word Gond comes, as they live mostly in lush green areas and forests.

According to their belief looking at good things brings more good luck. Therefore, on every auspicious occasion, it is a tradition to paint Gond art and represent it as a form of respect and lucky charm.

8. Kerala Murals

Kerala Murals are a method of painting done on the walls or ceilings, where the colors penetrate and get fixed in the plaster. To date, the mural paintings of Kerala are the most iconic symbol of the religion’s culture and artistic traditions.

The history of Kerala Murals started as being influenced by Kerala’s Topography and Nature. Later, the cultural province and the bhakti activities too enthused the painters.

The Onam floral patterns and drawings on the ground are an offshoot of the Kerala murals style. The Kerala Murals are, on the surface, prepared by a painstaking process.

9. Patachitra

Patachitra or Pattachitra, which, when broken down into ‘patta’ means cloth and ‘Chitra’ means painting, is a general term for traditional based cloth-scroll painting. Patachitra is one of the ancient artworks famous for depicting Hindu divinity and figures. Something very common to the Indian Style of paintings is their vibrancy and intricate details, which Patachitra paintings have too.

They will have sharp and contrasting colors, elongated eyes, and detailed body parts. The paintings are the origins of Odisha and West Bengal. The paintings are in temples in Odisha and centers of Puri, Bhubaneshwar, and Konark. One of the most remarkable works can be found in the temples of Jagannath at Puri and Sun temple at Konark.

10. Pichhwai

Pichhwai Paintings are works of art that originated in the Nathdwara district of Udaipur, Rajasthan. These paintings are usually behind idols, which are made with many intricacies and are visually stunning. They are made of cloth, depicting tales of Krishna’s life. Creating a Pichhwai can take several months as it captures every detail.

These paintings are rich embroidery and applique work, with rich colors used within very dark borders. We also use Gold to adorn the painting, adding to its value and charm. Sadly, this type of artwork cannot get enough recognition and is losing its identity, and more recognition and revival can help in its survival.

Exceptional art collection forms and craftsmanship reflects the country’s rich cultural diversity. The different types of paintings from the other regions symbolize the country’s customs, traditions, and philosophies transmitted from one generation to the next. Each types of painting in India is unique in its Style and beauty. And if you invest some time you’ll realize all depict nature and mythological themes. These different types of painting in India get you to move back in time and cherish their true appreciation and rustic appeal.

Most of his art reflects intersections of history, mythology, and technology. His mythologies are revealed using paintings, sculptural installations, films, performances, and video games. All these are created using profound materials such as salvaged furniture, digital ephemera, everyday residue, etc.

Sahej has participated in numerous prestigious exhibitions. A few of them include Hartware Median KunstVerein, Germany, Technoshamanism, etc. The unimaginable was one of his famous artworks, a large-scale installation of mechanical sculptures of mythical creatures made from recycled materials. The sculpture was accompanied by a performance where the creature is brought to life through a combination of robotics and human performers, exploring ideas about the relationship between technology and the body, as well as the creation and destruction of myths. His unique and imaginative blending of Indian folklore and cultural history with technology creates an immersive and thought-provoking experience for audiences.

14. Subodh Gupta

Subodh Gupta is another leading Indian contemporary artist who works in various media. He is renowned for his monumental sculptural work with everyday materials such as tin cans, lunch boxes, cookware, etc. He utilizes all these objects to portray multiple meanings and reflect India’s status. With his creativity, Subodh Gupta also questions the society between globalization and traditional customs, old caste politics, booming wealth, religious beliefs, etc.

Gupta’s work has its root in history and Indian culture and portrays the link between rural, urban, traditional, and modern aspects of Indian society. “The Very Hungry God,” made from only stainless steel cooking utensils, was one of Gupta’s best artworks. The sculpture is a commentary on consumerism and the impact of Western culture on India, and it is a symbol of the country’s rapid modernization. Gupta’s artwork took place globally in several prestigious art fairs, museums, and biennales.

Conclusion

In recent years, the interest in Indian contemporary art has also been increasing globally. Auctions and exhibitions in prestigious international institutions like the Tate Modern and Centre Georges Pompidou are evidence of the increasing popularity of Indian contemporary artists. Overall, the contemporary art scene in India is dynamic and exciting, with a wealth of talented artists creating thought-provoking and visually stunning works that speak to a wide range of issues and concerns.

Mostly when I come across people who appreciate art and creativity, and not only that they also have an inclination towards having a collection of original artworks and paintings be it in their homes, offices, or personal galleries, they seem to have a confusion regarding the concept of artworks they would want to explore or the kind of figures/symbols that their mind is more attracted towards.

They might also have an idea or words to describe their taste but mostly due to a lack of self-reflection in this regard they fail to optimize their collection and buy the artworks that don’t go well according to the theme they have in mind.

Before digging deeper to unravel your taste in art, let’s understand how people collect art or even start their journey as art collectors and why should you too, if you don’t do it already.

The following steps are the most apparent ways generally people with not much knowledge about art but the only thing, that is love and curiosity about it start their journey as art collectors

  • To Decorate their walls

This is the most common way people start with the collection. In order to beautify their surroundings or the place they live or spend the most time at, like offices, they want to keep something that is symbolic of positivity and good vibes, and also adds to the whole ambiance.

Art for Home decor

  • The hidden personality comes to play-

Slowly as time passes by, they feel more connected with the paintings, and the mind wanders to produce random theories to satisfy its need to unravel the mystery that went behind the making of the painting. If it’s a spiritually realistic painting they will start feeling the connection with their inner self and a connection with the universe. Or if they are having a painting displaying some historical scene, they might develop some empathy towards the whole scenario in the painting.

Mostly these instances of a connection with a painting happen only when you spend some time with it.

  • Their own story unfolds in their souls-

So when they discover the inner side of them or certain emotions with the painting, they start contemplating their past and story of life. They go through those emotions predominantly that the artist wanted to convey in the painting.

  • They become better communicators of their emotions apparently-

Being able to understand your thoughts and way of being, you are not only spiritually connected but also fulfilling the most basic intent of creativity. When you are able to tell your side of the situation to people, you are nothing but grateful for having got the opportunity to spend some time thinking over the intention behind the art.

You become more attached to the idea of having these kinds of artworks to explore deeper sides of yourself, after all, life is all about exploring.

  • Then you are on your quest to search for more similar paintings-

You are thrilled with the idea of exploring your inner self, your heart takes you to places like exhibitions, online art surfing, or art magazines wherever you can find something that can click you in an instant.

  • You like the idea of collecting all these to not only preserve them as your history but also pass it on as your legacy-

Owning an artwork means you are capturing something meant for others to be seen, understood, and appreciated, and that is how you are preserving history at your end. You will not only pass it on as your legacy but also help them realize their depths through it.

This is the way most people start collecting artworks and realize their love for creative talents and artists. They also bond with artists to know their side of the stories and thoughts that went behind the making of their art and also, they become a part of the community they share similar thoughts with.

But the journey to collecting artworks becomes more fun and interesting when you find your taste and preferences.

Let’s talk about how that is done-

  • Mostly it starts when you increase the purview of creativity shown to you. You should be able to access as much art as you can.

Finding the right Art

Don’t miss a chance to visit exhibitions, online or offline, visit museums, or meet artists. Go on galleries online too to see what the creative world has got to offer you.

As it is rightly said, “enjoy the journey as much as the destination” this phase of your search would be really enjoyable and helpful for you later in life too when your thought processes change with time, you’d know which form of art now you’d look forward too.

  • It is really suggested that you should always keep journaling your thoughts and actions. And why so? Because you understand yourself more 😊

The journey to finding your taste in art starts from within you.

After all, knowing yourself is where all the wisdom starts from. The key is to remain patient with yourself, talk to the artists, and dig deeper into your own self. ‘

The best part of being an art collector is the way you start unraveling different layers of yourself to reach the depth of your soul.

  • When you actually start materializing your thoughts by purchasing and collecting relevant artworks for yourself, start archiving them too and let them reflect a piece of your past.

Because we all grow with time, changes take place, and hence let them capture your moments and be the souvenir of your past.

Going back to your collection after a few years you would feel so proud of your journey.

I believe looking back into the past, smiling at it, and being proud of the person you are today, art has the power to all that to you when you build a collection like that for yourself.

  • Sometimes on your beautiful journey to life, there are a lot of down moments too. My personal suggestion would be to not start accumulating any artwork that shows or projects your emptiness or low points in life because the time will change but those artworks stay over there and may manifest those realities more into your life. After all, it is true what you see is what you become.

Collection of Art

While artworks do reflect your inner self, try buying more happy artworks even when you’re sad. Don’t worry they still have the capacity to remind you of your journey when you look back on it, so you don’t need something that is absolutely relevant to your feelings.

Their aesthetics and feel-factor, and whether they convey hope, happiness and joy are more important too. You don’t want your friends and family to see through it daily because you’re feeling like that 😉

Thankfully on our website, you can contact us and send a mail to us, where we can suggest to you, some artworks based on your taste and thoughts, not just that, you can also get customized artwork made according to your thoughts.

  • There is always a possibility for growth in certain fields. You might want to study more about a certain field like philosophy or history, culture or maybe just spirituality, astronomy or astrology and what not.

You would love to explore the characteristics of this field and also might want to buy those relevant artworks to show your interest in this to people who come and visit you.

This journey of exploring never ends, and that’s why being an art collector is a process to know yourself more, it’s a spiritual journey some may say, and for others, it is just a way to reflect on your likes and thoughts, whatever it may be called, it is an endless journey. And so much fun too!

With all that being said, why don’t you explore some artworks now! 😊

We at IndiGalleria, are proud to announce our association with the NGO Shree Kalptaru Sansthan (Jaipur, Rajasthan, India), dedicated to the preservation and conservation of our mother nature. With the rising pollution and the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, we noticed how nature was trying to recover from the harm done by humans.

We along with our artists have taken the initiative to associate with the NGO and donate a part of our income to them from the exhibition which is going to organize for a big social cause.

So to start with, we are organizing an online art show from 21st November 2020 to 02 December 2020.

Let’s talk more about the man behind this great organization.

Vishnu Lamba is recognized in India as the “Tree Man of India”. This name was given to him by then President of India “Pranab Mukherjee”. There are several reasons behind it and these are:-

Vishnu Lamba

  • Without any government support. Vishnu Lamba has given life to approx 5.0 million trees in India
  • He has planted approx 26 lacs trees with public participation.
  • He has saved 13 lacs trees from cutting down
  • He has distributed 11 lacs trees free.
  • He has done all his environmental work without any government support.

Tree Man of India: – The complete world is going through an environmental crisis today. In India, the environmental crisis is also increasing rapidly. The random cutting of trees also due to government negligence and lack of awareness among the people are the major reasons. Whereas there was a straight effect on mankind, the presence of water for animals and birds is running out. Seeing the situation, a young boy from Rajasthan left his home and vowed to dedicate his life to the environment. Vishnu Lamba loves the trees, plants, animals, and birds, and he always wanted to use all his efforts in favor of their safety and protection.

Plant Thief or Tree Man: Vishnu Lamba was born on June 3, 1987, in village Lamba, situated three kilometers from Mohandas police station area in Tonk district. While Vishnu was of 7 years old only, since that he had begun planting various types of plants in a cattle ranch. Vishnu was the kind of person who never feels hesitant to steal the plants from other people’s homes. Due to this bad habit of him, his parent sent him to Rooppura village of Uniyara Tehsil, the house of his Buaji (father’s sister). But his love for nature continued to grow. After this Vishnu moved to Jaipur with his Tauji SN Sharma and there he again started stealing plants. Once he stole saplings from the nursery of the Jaipur Collector Shrimat Pandey at Jawahar Circle.

56 Freedom Revolutionaries Families: – For the first time since independence, Vishnu Lamba toured 22 states of the country and searched the families of more than 56 freedom Fighters. Vishnu has also planted the saplings at the birthplace and renunciation of martyrs. Vishnu introduced the families of martyrs to the President of India Pranab Mukherjee and made them aware of their problems. By organizing various programs in respect of these mighty Fighters’ families of India, he gave the message of love for the nation.

An Oath to Former Dacoits for Environmental Protection: – Inspired by the film ‘Paan Singh Tomar’, Vishnu Lamba wandered the ravines of Chambal, stretching from Chambal to Chitrakoot in Rajasthan, for nearly two years and linked the former dacoits with his campaign. Vishnu met and lived with many former dreaded dacoits including Malkhan Singh, Gabbar Singh, Renu Yadav, etc. On March 20, 2016, Vishnu organized an event ‘Pahle Basaaya Beehad-Ab Bachayenge Beehad’ in Jaipur, where all former dacoits took an oath to protect the environment.

Plant Trees for Birds: – Vishnu Lamba, who has saved Lakhs of trees so far, is also very much in love with birds. In the last 15 years, he has installed an uncountable number of water pots for birds in summer by running the ‘Water pots for birds’ campaign. Apart from this, Vishnu and his volunteers have been organizing the free medical camp for birds injured by Chinese Manjha on Makar Sankranti for the last 9 years, in which thousands of birds are treated every year. He runs a year-round rescue operation for injured birds and animals through the NGO.

Shree Kalpataru Sansthan – The NGO: Vishnu Lamha, the Founder and Director of ‘Shree Kalpataru Sansthan’ has dedicated his life to environmental protection. Whatever work Vishnu has done related to plants, animals and birds have been done under this NGO.
– The NGO has been doing plantations regularly for the last 20 years. The NGO has also saved uncountable animals and birds comprising millions of green trees by opposing policies against the environment.
– The NGO has pledged to make 100 villages of the country environmentally ideal villages (Kalp Grams), in which three villages are towards becoming “Adarsh Grams” through special innovations.
– For the first time in the world, the NGO carried out a procession of trees on elephants in Jaitara, Tehsil of Pali District. Also, more than five hundred Vriksh-Mitra (tree-friends) conferences were organized in the state, in which traditional food was served on banana leaves.

Art as an Investment

People, these days, are becoming financially smarter. Instead of just investing in the conventional way, people are now diversifying their portfolios by investing in non-conventional things like jewels, rare coins, antiques, fine wines and artwork. We often think of art investors as filthy rich snobs. But that’s not true anymore. In recent times, art investments have gained quite some popularity. This is because of two reasons. Art investment has become more accessible. People can now invest in art with even $5000 to $10,000. Another reason for this popularity is that some art pieces are being auctioned at millions of dollars. As a result, more and more people are being drawn towards this However, the question remains, is this a viable investment for you? And how can one invest in art? To answer these questions and much more, we have compiled this guide. So, let’s begin.

Understanding The Current Art Market

In recent times, artwork has grown as a significant investment. You might have often heard that a certain piece of art was sold for a record-breaking amount. In 2018, art was declared as the best investment class by the Wall Street Journal as it performed far better than any other investment class. Furthermore, according to a 2019 report by Art Basel and UBS Global Art, global art sales have grown more than $67 million.

According to a Forbes article, art isn’t now limited to being a piece of beauty but it is also becoming a strong market. Another study says that in the past 4 decades, the price of artworks has almost grown by 1000%. According to  Arto Baltayan of Money Crasher, this is the reason that art investment has become a huge thing in recent times. Apart from individual investors, many art investment funds have also started to take advantage of this boom.

Chris Muller of Dough Roller says that if we look at some recent art sales, we can find out that some pieces were sold for a very handsome amount. For example, in 2019, a sculpture of a rabbit was sold for a whopping $91.1 million. And it became the most expensive artwork sold by a living artist. Before that, an Amedeo Modigliani masterpiece was sold for $157 million at a Sotheby’s auction. In 2015, an investment billionaire, Ken Griffin, purchased “Interchange”, the abstract painting by Willem De Kooning for $300 million. And there are so many more such examples where a piece of art was sold for an astounding amount of money. Thus, the art market is currently a very lucrative market.

Types of Art

When we think of art, we usually imagine paintings. But art comprises a lot more than just paintings. It also includes drawings, photography, digital, mixed media, sculpture, prints, and even video. Some art purists might not consider certain things art. But that’s a debate for another time. However, the whole discussion comes down to this, who is the creator of the work? An artist or a craftsman? Is it a one-of-a-kind work or is it something that already exists?

Broadly speaking, if someone creates something that is not unique, it isn’t considered art and its creator is called a craftsman rather than an artist. For example, a potter or a blacksmith, or a glassblower. However, if these same people use their skills to create something unique, they might be known as an artist. And it has happened with some people.

Now that we know a piece of art can be much more than just a painting, we need to consider one more thing. And that’s the originality of the work. Here, we would like to mention that in certain cases, even a copy of a piece of art can be valuable. To further understand this, let’s examine the different types of art based on their originality as classified by Arto Baltayan of Money Crasher.

  • Original: No prizes for guessing this one. This is the actual work of the artist. And it is generally one of a kind. And the rarer it is, the higher will be the market value. Most art investors invest in the original pieces. However, purchasing these pieces is obviously quite expensive and not everyone’s cup of tea.
  • Giclees: It is pronounced as zhee-klay. Although it is a copy of the original work, its quality is superior. And that’s the reason it possesses some value. It is often known as “museum quality”. And many giclees also come with a certificate of authenticity. And at times, these can also obtain a substantial profit.
  • Prints: It is a copy of the original work but it might have some value. Different prints are produced using different techniques. And as a result, their quality and visual impact also vary. This further affects their value. A beginner can start their art investment by investing in prints. However, one must remain cautious about the quality of the print. For example, limited edition prints or the ones that are autographed by the artist can have a substantial value.
  • Posters: Also known as reproductions are the copies of the original work which aren’t printed within a limit. These can enhance the beauty of your home. However, they don’t have a substantial investment value.

Art As A Viable Investment

Before jumping on this bandwagon, we need to understand that art investment is very different from our usual stock market investments.  According to Brian M Reiser of Investment U, it is a long-term investment where you can’t expect much returns before 10 years. Some of these investments can be a bit expensive. But if you purchase the work of local artists, the price is generally lower. However, one must also remember that apart from the actual cost of the artwork, there are some other costs involved too. These costs include storage costs, framing of the work, insurance, auction fees, sales tax, appraisal costs, etc.

One also needs to remember that you shouldn’t invest all your capital in artworks. It should only be a part of your investment, usually 10-20%, depending on a lot of factors. Furthermore, it is worth mentioning that this investment has a risk factor as well. But as we know higher risks often bring higher returns. According to an Artprice report, the average return on investment on art is 7.6%. Therefore, you can begin by investing in local artists.

It is important to remember that art is a long-term investment. As they say, patience bears riper fruits. So, you need to wait for the right moment to cash in on your investment. You can’t just go and randomly sell it like a stock. You need proper channels like auction houses to sell it.

Having said that, the art market is significantly growing in recent times. And we have often seen that even when the other markets are plummeting, the art market is doing great. Even in times of economic recession, the art market didn’t suffer much. Because the value of art doesn’t depend much on the market conditions. It is less volatile than the stock market. This means that the value of the art doesn’t fluctuate vastly with the economic fluctuations. Additionally, this market has its own rules as you can’t really estimate the true value of a piece of art. For example, if an up-and-coming artist of today becomes successful tomorrow, his artwork might be sold for millions. There is no sure shot way to know this. Thus, the risk is inevitable. But with more risk, there is often more return. As many people have made a substantial fortune by investing in the right talent.

How To Invest In Art

Rebecca Lake of The Balance says that you need to have some basic knowledge of art before taking the plunge. For example, you have to decide your niche. Do you need to decide what type of art do you want to invest in? What period of art are you interested in? Are you looking for an old piece or a contemporary one? Do you want to buy the work of a well-known classic artist? Or do you want to place your bet on a new artist? Do you want to invest in painting or a sculpture or maybe photography? Do you want to buy an original piece or a limited edition print? These are the questions that you have to answer.

And all of this becomes easier if you have a genuine interest in art and also some basic knowledge. According to Brian M Reiser of Investment U, you should try to learn as much as you can, about art before investing in it. You can start by going to your local or national museums, visiting a local art gallery. Research about the up-and-coming artists and also learn about the history of art. Visit art fairs. Understand the local, national and international art scene. You can also speak to art consultants and curators to get a better grip on the art market. Online auction houses and sites like Artnet are also very beneficial.

If you want to support the budding talent, there are online art galleries like indigalleria.com which sell authentic handmade paintings of local famous and up-and-coming artists who have a great scope of growth in not only their creativity but also in surging their market prices.

Now coming to the financial aspect, you need to decide the amount of money you are willing to spend on this. As already mentioned, it is a long-term investment. Therefore, your money will be tied up for at least 10 years. Now, the question is how much are you willing to part with for such a long duration of time? Other costs like storage costs, auction fees, insurance, etc also have to be factored in.

According to a 2019 report by Artprice, there is solid growth in the contemporary artworks sold. Individual artworks are being sold for millions with 3% of the contemporary art being sold at over $100,000 in 2018-19. Spending this kind of money isn’t possible for everyone. And that is why there is an option to buy from your local artists who display their work in the local art galleries and art fairs. This way you can also support up-and-coming talent. You can opt for both online and offline art galleries. Sites like IndiGalleria can be a good place to look for some amazing art.

Now that you have decided the type and piece of art you want to purchase and the amount of money you can spend, the next step is to find out the cost of the artwork. In her article on the Balance, Rebecca Lake says that you can use various apps like Magnus to determine the price of a piece of art. Alternatively, you can look around in your local art galleries, both online and offline. You will also need the help of a professional appraiser to assess the quality of the artwork. It is very important to assess the genuineness of the work.

Now comes the purchase. Gone are the days when art investments were only the forte of the rich. We are living in an era where you can invest in art even if you aren’t overflowing with money. Because there are a lot of options. Not everyone needs to purchase a Leonardo Da Vinci. In recent times, art pieces by local and up-and-coming artists have also fetched huge money in the market. If you have a substantial amount of money, you can buy an Old classic artwork. If your budget is a little tighter, platforms like IndiGalleria give you the chance to invest in local artists.

Alternatively, you can buy shares in the artwork. In today’s digital age, a lot of artworks are sold online. And there is an option for you to buy a share in a high-value piece of art instead of buying the whole piece. However, you will need to make sure that the investment firm or the online art gallery is legitimate and the artwork is genuine.

In her article on Money Under 30, Amy Berger says that there are businesses like Masterworks and Maecenas that sell shares of artworks. These platforms are genuine and also very suitable for a beginner. You don’t need to have extensive knowledge about the field. Neither do you need to invest a hefty amount? Investments start from $10,000. Platforms like these purchase paintings and sell their shares to interested investors. And they keep you updated about the value of the painting.

This means that you don’t own the painting individually. You along with many others own a share in the particular piece. Another benefit of buying the shares is that you don’t need to store the artwork. So, you don’t have to bear any additional costs. And neither do you need to worry about storing and caring for the artwork.

Another option is investing in art mutual funds like arthena.com. Here, you can purchase shares in art funds. It allows you to have a diverse portfolio and there are better return opportunities. However, you don’t actually own any piece of art on this platform.

In the end, art mutual funds and shares in the art can be good options but they don’t give you an ownership of the artwork. A better option is to purchase whole artworks of up-and-coming or popular local artists. The artwork is affordable for you. And at the same time, it is a good investment opportunity as the value of the artwork will only appreciate over time.

The Pros and Cons of Investing In Art

So, we have understood what the art market is, how it works and how one can invest in it. Now, we will discuss the pros and cons of investing in art, so that you can finally make your own decision.

The Pros

If you have the money and you decide to invest in artwork, the following are the advantages that you will get.

  • Less Financial Fluctuations: We know how volatile the financial market is. Stock prices can skyrocket and hit rock bottom due to the slightest changes in the market forces. However, art is an investment class that is not affected by these market fluctuations. Therefore, this investment offers you the stability that no other investment can offer.
  • Appreciation in Value: There would hardly be any piece of art that has depreciated with time. Most of the artworks appreciate value as time goes by. As a piece of art becomes rarer or more classic, its value increases multifold. And if an artist’s popularity grows, his artwork becomes more and more expensive. Therefore, investing in a promising talent can bear you great benefits. This isn’t the case with any other investment class. Investments like stocks or mutual funds can increase as well as a decrease in value. There is no guarantee.
  • Aesthetic Value: Most of the art investors are actually art collectors or enthusiasts. Owning a magnificent piece of art gives you a certain pleasure. It has a certain aesthetic value that makes it a valuable asset. Many people often pass on artworks as assets to their future generations. There is a stature associated with owning fine pieces of art.
  • It is a physical asset: Another benefit of art investment, especially when you buy an artwork individually, is that you have complete control over the asset. You are its owner and you can decide what to do with it. You can handle and care for it yourself, without having to depend on others. There is no middleman involved. You can personally look after your asset.

The Cons

  • Knowledge of Art is required: As a novice, investment in art is not that easy. You have to familiarize yourself with a lot of details like the type of art, the period of art, the medium of art, etc. You also need to be able to tell the difference between genuine from fake. Moreover, you need to have an understanding of various forms of art and their performance in the market. However, this problem is now being solved by online platforms which help you make the right purchase without having to know too much about art.
  • Not a liquid asset: Selling a piece of art is not easy. It is a long-term investment. You can’t just buy and sell art at your whim. There’s a lot that goes into this. A lot of planning is required to get the right price for your piece of art. But at the same time, if you do it right, it can help you earn a very handsome amount of money.
  • A lot of costs involved: We already know that buying an original piece of art is very expensive. But the fact is that there are many other costs involved too. There are handling costs, storage costs, insurance costs, auction fees, etc. Moreover, taking care of the artwork and keeping it safe isn’t always s cakewalk.

Final Word

Art is the hottest new investment. Learning about how a piece of art is sold for millions, one might often be enticed to invest in art. But it isn’t as simple as that. There are certain things that have to be kept in mind. Art investment can never be your sole investment. But it can only be used to diversify your portfolio as it is less volatile. You also need to remember that it isn’t a liquid asset. You need to wait for 10 or more years to get the right returns.

This is not to say that you have to be a fine arts graduate. But, a genuine interest in art and basic knowledge will work wonders for you. Most of the art investors are basically art collectors who turned to investors later. However, today with various online art galleries and other options available, you don’t necessarily need to know too much about art. Neither do you need to have a ton of money? Our esteemed guest of Honour, Professor Niren Sengupta, is a professional painter and ex-principal of the College of Art, New Delhi. He is born in 1940 in Bengal, and Niren Sengupta’s journey is no less than a miraculous inspiration not only for the people in the art field but also for others who get a glorious chance to read or meet him. Though he graduated from science from Calcutta University his diversion towards art and exploring such great heights has been the universe’s grace and his fruitful efforts towards working for it.

He expresses his paintings beautifully because of his inner feelings, as for him art is the expression of inner-self. His communion with the happenings around himself and all that is going around in his life is what is shown ultimately in his paintings. While beauty could be found in any piece or part of this world, Professor Niren Sengupta finds it in the serenity of the total submission of monks of Ramakrishna Mission to the mission. Because he feels that what can be more beautiful than a mission to serve and sacrifice for mankind. And therefore the one who recognizes art can always find the common essences of his inner reflections infused with serenity, sacrifice, service and beauty.

He has been a part of several solos and prestigious group exhibitions where his art and his skills have always been appreciated widely. He has been awarded a lot of recognitions and revered awards like AIFACS Award and NBT Award in New Delhi; Award for Humanity Udayan Care; DSCWOS. The highest award he was honored by Hon’ble Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina when he was invited to Bangladesh.Artist and Professor Niren Sengupta

Over the span of 50 years of his professional journey, his achievements have sprawled enough to even step into teaching at both graduate and post-graduate levels. He is also the founder member of ‘Gallery 26’ in New Delhi, besides being a member of Calcutta painters and Executive member of the Academy of Visual Media, New Delhi. If one needs to have a glimpse of his prestigious collections of artworks, he can see it in the Lalit Kala Academy.

All in all, a very humble and modest person with a big baggage of numerous achievements.
